Located in Desolation Sound, Cortes Island measures only about 25 by 13 kilometers. Like the inhabitants of the other islands in the Salish Sea, many live here to escape city life or to raise their children in a rural setting. What perhaps makes Cortes a little different though are the trees. The island’s eco-system remains intact. Impressive old growth stands remain. Even the second growth forest bares witness to forest management practices surprisingly responsible for their day. But perhaps most surprising of all is the fact that a large percentage of the population understand the need to harvest this resource. Even though it’s right in their backyard they view the forest as means of creating local employment into the future. Although planned for the immediate future, few support the grab and dash mentality of industrial logging as it shows little if any regard for local community values. It may hold merit in uninhabited areas of the province but not in populated areas with direct impacts on so many homes. The community is in the process of establishing a government recognized Community Forest on the island. Hopefully current plans can be put on hold until a solution can be found. It is out there.
